The Northwest Coast art form has always been open to new materials. Russian settlers introduced gold and silver coins to Alaska in 1798 and it wasn't long before native craftsmen were pounding them out to flat bars that could be formed into bracelets and other types of jewelry. Today, jewelry carving has become an important part of the art form.
